Resume Action Verbs & Synonyms: The 2026 Guide
Strong action verbs and synonyms for every resume bullet. Replace weak phrases like 'responsible for' to lift your ATS score and land more interviews.
Why action verbs matter
Recruiters spend an average of six seconds on a first pass, and applicant tracking systems (ATS) score every bullet against the exact language in the job description. Weak phrases like responsible for, worked on, or helped waste that time. Strong action verbs do three things at once: they signal ownership, match keywords ATS engines look for, and set up a concrete number to follow.
The bullet formula that works
Every impactful resume bullet follows the same shape:
[Strong action verb] + [what you did] + [measurable outcome]
If a bullet doesn't start with a verb of action, rewrite it. If it doesn't end with a number, percentage, or dollar amount, rewrite it again.
Action verbs by category
Pick verbs that match the role you're targeting — leadership language for management jobs, delivery language for IC roles, analytical language for data roles.
